2. What is a MoodleMoot? Should I go?

What is a Moodle Moot?
A MoodleMoot is a conference dedicated to users, developers and administrators of the very popular open-source course management system called Moodle. It lasts 2 or 3 days and is held in a conference center, university, or similar facility where a lot of people can meet and discuss Moodle. At a MoodleMoot you can take part in workshops, presentations, and forums covering all aspects of integrating and using Moodle effectively in a learning environment.
What is MoodleMoot Japan?
MoodleMoot Japan is the annual conference of the Moodle Association of Japan. It has been held every year since 2008. Because of its previous success in promoting Moodle use in Japan and its great contributions to the worldwide Moodle community, it is one of only a few MoodleMoots in the world that is recognized as an "official MoodleMoot" by Moodle headquarters in Australia.
Should I go?
If you are a teacher, educational administrator, software developer, materials developer, or IT manager then this conference will be of interest to you, and, if at all possible, you should try to go. If you are already using Moodle, then you can pick up ideas on how to use it more effectively as a teaching and research tool. If you are new to Moodle, then you can learn a lot from the hands-on workshops, and from talking to experienced users and suppliers of Moodle related services, such as hosting a Moodle site and creating e-learning materials.

3. Message from the President of Nagasaki International University

Dr. Yukio Ando, President of Nagasaki International University

Dear Participants of the 2024 MoodleMoot Japan,

My name is Dr. Yukio Ando and I'm the president of Nagasaki International University. I would like to again extend a warm welcome to each and every one of the 2024 MoodleMoot Japan participants. Although we could not meet face to face for the 2022 MoodleMoot Japan which was also hosted here at Nagasaki International University, I'm looking forward to the chance of meeting face to face in this upcoming event. I hope you feel welcome and supported by the faculty and staff of Nagasaki International University.

I hope that you can enjoy the positive atmosphere during the few days that the conference will take place. Here at Nagasaki International University, the main theme of our university is hospitality, and central to that idea is the tea ceremony. It epitomizes the hospitality of each and every member of our university and we wish to extend that hospitality to each and every participant.

During the days of the conference, I hope you can learn many things and improve your skills in education technology for the benefit of your own institutions and your own students. May you continue to enjoy life-long learning throughout this conference and into the future thereafter.

We want to welcome each and every one of you to our campus. We hope that you will make some positive and lasting memories while you visit our humble institution. See you all very soon!

Best regards,

Yukio Ando, MD
President
Nagasaki International University

4. Greeting from the MAJ President

MoodleMoot Japan in 2024 will be held at Nagasaki International University.

In fact, preparations for MoodleMoot Japan at Nagasaki International University were initially underway with consideration of holding the event in person in 2022. However, due to the impact of COVID-19, the safety of all participants was a top priority, and as a result, the 2022 event was held in the form of an online Moot.

We are pleased to announce that Nagasaki International University has agreed to host the meeting as a face-to-face meeting. Once again, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for your support and cooperation.

This will be the second face-to-face meeting for the COIVD-19 transition, following the Ibaraki Moot last year. We hope that you will make use of the MoodleMoot as a venue for active discussions and information exchange.

The keynote speaker for this year's MoodleMoot will be Martin Dougiamas, the developer of Moodle. We have also invited Dr. Tatsunori Matsui of Waseda University, who is the president of the Learning Analysis Society of Japan, to give a keynote speech in Japanese, which will provide an opportunity to share his knowledge on how to analyze learning from the learning history accumulated by the Moodle LMS. We hope that this will be an opportunity for you to share your knowledge on how to analyze learning from the learning history accumulated by Moodle LMS.

I hope that MoodleMoot Japan 2024 will be a fruitful event for all of you.

Yoshikazu ASADA
President, Moodle Association of Japan

Learning analytics and educational evaluation in practice with Moodle

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of LMSs, including Moodle, has increased. This has made it easier than ever to obtain data on education and learning. Learning analytics, which is the use of education and learning data exemplified in such topics as "individualized optimization of learning" and "utilization of learning data," has become a hot topic in recent years. "Data", of course, is indispensable for learning analysis, but what kind of data can be obtained? And how is education evaluated through the acquisition of data? In this keynote, learning analytics and the actual practice of educational evaluation that forms its basis, will be discussed through examples of use of Moodle applications.

Dr. Martin Dougiamas

Founder and Head of Research, Moodle

The next generation of Moodle integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Open Educational Technology (OET) into an online and blended learning ecosystem. In this talk, the founder of Moodle, Dr. Martin Dougiamas, will offer a vision of how lifelong learning will evolve around an infrastructure that includes the Moodle LMS but also is interconnected with portfolios, OER (MoodleNet), learning records/credentials, persistent whiteboards/BBB, cloud technologies, and other tools/environments. He has recently founded another society called OpenEdTech (https://openedtech.global). While head of research at Moodle HQ, Martin will outline how the next generation of Moodle will connect these critical learning networks with individuals so that their learning is empowered, even in the most remote corners of the Earth, and make it easier for teachers to be empowered to change their classroom, their school and their society. Japanese society, which values education at the highest level in the world, is joining this movement at the forefront of lifelong education and learning organizations.

The Art of Questioning with Moodle Quiz

Marcus Green has been working with Moodle since 2003 and authored two of the most popular Quiz Question types--Gapfill and Wordselect. He will give an overview of the main custom quiz related plugins for Moodle, particularly for language education and make a comparison of H5P activity types with Moodle activities. He will cover quizzing with multimedia and how to evaluate the sustainability of plugins. Finally, Marcus will project the future of quiz question types with Large Language Models (LLM) such as ChatGPT, which embed content from billions of pieces of text and, given the right prompt, can give a vast range of flexible, nuanced, automatic feedback.
