MoodleReader is a plug-in for Moodle that allows students to take quizzes on their reading. It allows teachers who might not want to go through the hassle of collecting and reviewing reports to track their students' reading, and at the same time, through a "stamp collection" of book covers, provides an incentive for the students to continue to read. The greatest challenge to creating a site such as MoodleReader is not the programming but rather the support required for students and teachers to use it effectively with minimal reliance on the site management. Moodle, unfortunately, has too many 'bells & whistles' for teachers who aren't comfortable with technology. There are a myriad of opportunities to 'do the wrong' thing so we have decided to create a 'non-Moodle' version that still relies on Moodle's excellent quiz function. This presentation will demonstrate the new version which is designed to have the look and feel of a web-based language learning tool. We will discuss the problems with using Moodle 'as is' and how the new version of MoodleReader allows the same basic functionality in a more comprehensible way.
