Self-access centers have long been used to enable students to pursue self-directed study. Traditionally, such centers have been brick-and-mortar centers, exclusively comprised of physical resources with the inherent limitations therein. In today’s digital world, the challenge of enticing students to visit centers becomes even more problematic. How can the presence of a self-access center be extended beyond the physical world to the virtual? The purpose of this presentation is to exhibit how a mash up of physical and virtual resources centered on a Moodle can get students through both the physical and virtual doors of a self-access center. Physical resources to be introduced include a writing lab and a library of graded readers, movies, and comics. Virtual resources in this case study can be categorized according to purpose. These include a MoodleReader installation, E-book database, and the commercial service iKnow! Virtual resources that encourage students to access the center are forms in Google Drive, the scheduling software Doodle, and the cataloging software called Delicious Library.
