Presentation title: Using Moodle's database for student online profiles Presentation type: Presentation (90 mins) プレゼンテーション(90分) Presentation language: English 英語 Presentation keywords: database, using Moodle, student profiles, HTML, intermediate users Presentation abstract: Demands for improved individualized attention to students' education have inspired some universities to introduce student profiles or portfolios to actively track students’ progress. These profiles often include such items as time spent studying abroad, proficiency test results, student goals, along with special interests and needs. This presentation will explore an example of a confidential, self-reporting student profile system utilizing Moodle’s database module. The two main purposes of this session are to introduce Moodle's database to beginning and intermediate users and to provide a demonstration of how to effectively use the database module for self-reporting projects where databases may be efficient. The discussion will cover database basics, including how to navigate the database, how to design and construct the profile system's database and its interfaces for the student profiles, as well as the elements of HTML used to format the interfaces for this project. An annotated template will be supplied and explained. Attendees may use this template freely in their own projects. The differences between profiles, such as the one presented in the presentation, and portfolio systems like Mahara will also be discussed. |

Demands for improved individualized attention to students' education have inspired some universities to introduce student profiles or portfolios to actively track students’ progress. These profiles often include such items as time spent studying abroad, proficiency test results, student goals, along with special interests and needs.
This presentation will introduce the Moodle database module and give example of how it can be used to create a confidential, self-reporting student profile system. It will describe how to ensure privacy for students.

Feedback Portfolios are important and in that sense, the presentation is definitely worthwhile. The presenter(s) should definitely also address how confidentiality is ensured. Peer Review 2Criteria | Assessment |

Feedback Personally, I don't think you need to include an explanation of how the database works and how to use it. It makes the presentation too long, and dillutes attention on your contribution. Therefore, I suggest you reduce the duration to 40mins or 20 mins, and just explain the design and function of your templates, demonstrate them in action, and show examples of data you have collected using them. If you are sure you want to do the introduction to the basics of the database module, please consider making the following change: OLD: This presentation will explore an example of a confidential, self-reporting student profile system utilizing Moodle’s database module NEW: This presentation will introduce the Moodle database module, explain how to use it, and give example of how it can be used to create a confidential, self-reporting student profile system. Feedback This sounds a little more like a workshop than a presentation so that is my only concern. Perhaps it should be labelled a workshop? Otherwise, very interesting and I hope I can see this. |
