Project Bluesky: A collaboratively built BigBlueButton cluster
Presentation abstract発表の要約

Project Bluesky began as an effort to build a group of shareable BigBlueButton servers that could be used by many universities in Japan with the effects of the Covid19 pandemic moving many institutions online suddenly in April 2020. Researching the costs of deploying a BigBlueButton cluster using "Scalelite" with the capacity to handle all the classes at one university is prohibitive. Based on the efforts made at MoodleMoot Japan 2020 (conference moved 100% online in just a few days), the presenters researched and implemented a Scalelite load-balanced BigBlueButton cluster. By building the Scalelite infrastructure and making it available to any university willing to participate, our project was able to cluster up to 10 BigBlueButton servers donated by various universities and one corporate sponsor. This presentation will explain at a basic level the process of researching, implementing, and troubleshooting the cluster, the ways in which universities participated in using the cluster, and the various problem-solving experiences learned throughout the process that will hopefully inspire those wanting to implement similar open-source collaborative projects in the future.

Presentation abstract: Project Bluesky is a cluster of BigBlueButton servers connected by a Scalelite load balancer that was collaboratively built in response to Covid19 and the increased need for online teaching. Inspired by Moodlemoot Japan 2020 which was moved online using BigBlueButton days before it started, project lead Thom Rawson started work on a collaborative project, that would come to be known as “Bluesky. ” Prof. Rawson setup a Scalelite server as a load balancer and invited others to join the project, adding their BBB nodes to the project, enabling all participants to benefit from peakload capacity sharing. The key component of the cluster was the load balancer, which unlike standard load balancers, must be smart in sending users to the servers in which their BigBlueButton room is hosted. A simple round-robin style load balancer will not work, and so Project Bluesky implements the Scalelite load balancer. This presentation will describe the story of how Project Bluesky came to be, the challenges that needed to be overcome in creating a BigBlueButton cluster using Scalelite, and the lessons we learned throughout this experience that will hopefully be useful for anyone considering a similar project in the future.
